US President Donald Trump is under the impression that people will be disappointed if he cancels a meeting, it has emerged.
Trump took to Twitter to announce that he has postponed a scheduled visit to Denmark after PM Mette Frederiksen described his offer to buy Greenland as “absurd”, in a move that he feels is some sort of punishment.
“It’s quite the reprieve to be honest,” Frederiksen said.
“We have all been been dreading it for weeks, like when you have a mad racist uncle coming to stay – it’s awful but it’s your duty to be polite and smile when he stands there rambling for 20 minutes.
“Imagine trying to have a normal conversation with someone who thinks you can simply buy a whole country? That dinner would have dragged.
“Not having to entertain a massive orange man-baby for a few days is frankly nothing short of a blessing.”
Mr Trump had earlier confirmed reports that he was interested in buying Greenland. When asked on Sunday if he would consider trading a US territory for the island, he replied: “Maybe we could give them Puerto Rico?”
“The acquisition of Trumpland Arctic Resort would be the biggest deal in history, but as any good negotiator knows, if they won’t play ball, you need to flounce off in a strop until they’re prepared to come back to the table – it’s the art of the deal.”
